George Curtis "G.C." Cameron is an American soul and R&B singer.
After serving in the Vietnam War with the Marines, Cameron joined Motown act The Spinners as lead singer. He sang both lead parts on their first big hit, 1970's It's a Shame, co-written and produced by Stevie Wonder, and remained with Motown as a solo artist when The Spinners left Motown in 1971.
G. C. was best known for the hit, “It’s so hard to say Goodbye to Yesterday”, on the sound track for the 1975 movie, “Cooley High.” The song has endured with music fans for generations. Boyz II Men remade it into a new hit in the 1980’s. His time with with motown also yielded some now rare and highly sought after albums and singles. Many a fan old and new, still marvel the silky soul and diverse range of the singer once called the man with 6 voices.
He did several duets with some of the divas of motown in that era including Martha Reeves & the Vandellas and the classic soul songstress Syretta Wright. Another little known fact about G.C. is that not only is he the only lead singer to have vocally fronted the Spinners and the Temptations, he actually has sang more male /female duets than any singer of his era including Smokey Robinson and the late great Marvin Gaye, who first auditioned him and whom to this day G.C. pays great tribute to as a major influence, mentor and friend. He actually does an unforgettable tribute to Marvin in one of his current performances.
G.C. left Motown after the 1970s, and toured as an independent artist. He returned to his roots, moving back to Jackson Mississippi, his native home.He produced and sang on a gospel music album in the 80's which received critical acclaim. He also hosted a Sunday morning TV gospel show during his stay in Mississippi, Truth and Reality, out of Jackson. He returned to The Spinners from 2000 to 2002, and then joined the Temptations. He replaced Barrington "Bo" Henderson in 2003 as the lead singer of The Temps. G.C. sang lead on the album track "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)" which was nominated for a Grammy in 2007.
Before joining the Temptations, G. C. and Ben Obi produced and arranged all the songs on the project, Shadows. G. C. performed all vocals on Shadows which displays his amazing talent and five octave range. He later collaborated with his friend of many years Buster Malberry on the project Enticed Ecstacy where once again he displays not only his range as a singer but his ability to deliver on the works of another legendary soul singer. In this instance it is his rendition of Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready" that will leave the listener breathless. Sadly Buster would pass away shortly after the album was completed so there is a special sentimental significance to the project as well as a great collaboration between two legendary musicians and friends.
G.C. left the Temptations in 2007 to pursue other projects and now tours with the G.C. Cameron review where he literally reaches back in time to pay tribute vocally to all of the legendary singers he has worked with as well as the classic songs from the Spinners and Temptations his voice has contributed that the fans so much enjoy in addition to his current music.
On Saturday May 17, 2008 G.C. Cameron made a special guest appearance at a benefit concert for Hold on to Education Foundation Inc. in South Jersey. He received proclamations from New Jersey State Senator Diane Allen; and Mayor Jacqueline Jennings, with Councilman Eddie Campbell, Jr. of Willingboro NJ. Cherry Hill High School West A Cappella vocal group Men of Note paid tribute to Cameron in honor of his contribution to American Popular Music and his dedication to youth education. In late 2008, he appeared on the PBS special, Love Train: The Sound of Philadelphia, singing an impromptu duet with the lovely and talented Soul singer Diva Jeanne Carne, and classic songs from The Spinners, including their hit, The Rubberband Man which seems only fitting.
G.C. also is now on internet radio delivering a stirring yet soulful heartfelt message about the world and events as he sees them. He has a humanitarian project he calls 'The Sanctuary' which has a very special mission and shows us the other side of the singer we have enjoyed for decades. "I have seen many things profound and true in my life... says G.C. "There is a stanger in the house...occupying the space where the hearts and souls of the people should be allowed to expand in a spiritual and loving manner. I do what I can to make the people aware, both with my music and my message, that the stranger must be evicted..."
The message is loud and clear, coming from G.C. Cameron, the talented Soul singer and messenger.
